When a warning light appears on the dashboard of your BMW. Your stomach sinks.
Is it serious? Are you still driving? You need to pull over now or can you wait until the weekend?
The truth is, BMW dashboard lights can range from “stop now or you’ll destroy the engine” to “this is just telling you the high beams are on.” BMW owners pay hard-earned dollars and suffer real damage by treating every warning the same way — either panic or ignore everything.

Here is a simple explanation of the warning lights that your BMW is likely to display, arranged according to the level of urgency that you should really respond to.
Red Lights- Stop Driving or Act Immediately
Red indicates a problem that is currently hazardous or will result in significant mechanical damage if you keep driving. A red warning signal should never be ignored.
Oil Pressure Warning – Red Oil Can Symbol
This is one of the most vital lights on any automobile. It means the engine isn’t getting enough oil pressure and that causes metal to metal contact inside the engine within minutes. If this light appears whilst you are driving, pull over as soon as it is safe to do so and turn off the engine, do not restart the engine. Check oil level. Do not drive if the oil level is low until evaluated. Driving with low oil pressure can cause total engine seizure, turning a simple repair into a $10,000+ engine replacement.
Engine Temperature – Red Thermometer Symbol
Your engine’s running hot. Before continuing, stop, turn it off and let it cool down. When the engine is hot then the coolant cap should never be removed. Coolant leaks, broken thermostats and issues with cooling fans are common causes. BMWs with the N54 and N55 engines (2007–2016 3 Series, 5 Series, X5) are especially prone to cooling system issues as these parts age, therefore it’s important to know if you own one of these models.
Brake System Warning – Red Brake or Exclamation Mark in a Circle
A red brake warning light (not the parking brake light) indicates either you have critically low brake fluid, or there is a fault in the hydraulic brake system. Both are safety issues – you may have compromised the ability to brake. Pull over carefully, use as little brake as possible and if possible have the vehicle towed rather than driven.
Battery / Charging System – Red Battery symbol
The alternator is not charging the battery or there is a major electrical fault. The car will keep running on battery for a little while, but electrical systems will start to fail – power steering, lights, engine management. Don’t just ignore this and assume it will sort itself out. Get to a workshop as soon as possible.
Airbag / SRS Warning – Red Figure in Circle
The airbag or seatbelt pretensioner system was found to be malfunctioning. In a major collision, the airbags could not function correctly if this light is on. It is a safety concern that cannot wait to be diagnosed.
Yellow / Orange Lights: Get It Checked Within a Few Days
Yellow lights mean something needs attention, but the car is generally still safe to drive in the short term. Don’t put them off for months – “a few days” means a few days, not until the next scheduled service if that’s three months away.
Check Engine Light – Yellow Engine outline
This is the most extensive warning on the car. It could be a loose gas cap, a misfiring cylinder, a bad oxygen sensor or dozens of other things. A generic OBD scanner will be able to read a basic fault code but BMW’s engine management system has multiple control units that a generic reader can’t fully access. Don’t assume it’s minor, without a proper BMW diagnostic scan.
ABS Warning – Yellow ABS in Circle
Your anti-lock braking system is malfunctioning. The ABS feature which keeps the wheels from locking up during emergency braking, may be deactivated but your brakes are still operating normally. This is particularly crucial when it’s raining.
Tyre Pressure Warning – Yellow Exclamation Mark in Tyre
One or more tyres are low on air. Don’t just fill up the one that looks flat. Check all four with a gauge. If you check the pressure and it’s good and the light is still on you may need to reset or replace the sensor itself.
DSC / Stability Control Warning – Yellow Triangle with Car & Skid Marks
If this occurs when you are driving, the system is working (normal). If it is permanently illuminated when not moving, DSC may have been inadvertently deactivated or there may be a fault. Constant fault, car will not intervene if it detects a skid. Important to fix.
Service Due – Yellow Spanner or ‘Service’ Text
When it goes yellow, you’re getting close to the service interval. If it turns red, you are late. Oil that is especially overdue accelerates engine wear and can void warranty compliance on cars that are still within the coverage period.
Amber Lights Specific to Diesel BMWs
AdBlue Warning — Blue Liquid Symbol or Text “AdBlue”
BMW diesel models (320d, 520d, X3 20d, X5 30d and others) use AdBlue fluid to reduce emissions. When the level is low the car will give you a countdown of how many starts you have left before it won’t start at all – this is not bluff. If that drops to zero, the car will not start until AdBlue is topped up and the system reset by a workshop. Fill up on the first warning, not the last.
What a Generic OBD Scanner Won’t Tell You
Many BMW owners plug in a cheap OBD-II reader when a warning light appears. These tools read a subset of fault codes from the main engine control unit, but a BMW has up to 70 separate electronic control modules – covering the transmission, DSC, airbags, chassis, comfort systems and more.
A general reader might say there is something wrong. It won’t tell you which module, what is wrong with it, is it an intermittent or hard fault, or what is the right repair. Wrong diagnosis means fitting parts that aren’t broken – costly and doesn’t solve the problem.
Here at M Carter Automotive in Alphington we use manufacturer level diagnostic software that is able to read all BMW control modules, live data streams and fault history – the same access as the dealership.
